Morricone krijgt de onderscheiding “for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music.” Morricone heeft meer dan 400 films van muziek voorzien. Vijf nominaties heeft hij tot nu toe ontvangen, voor: Days of Heaven (1978), The Mission (1986), The Untouchables (1987), Bugsy (1991) en Malèna (2000).
